About De Kromhouthal: Layout, History & Architecture
De Kromhouthal, erected in 1928, began its life as a robust machine factory for Kromhout Motorenfabriek, specializing in marine diesel engines. Its architectural lineage is firmly rooted in industrial modernism, characterized by a utilitarian yet imposing structure of steel frameworks, exposed concrete, and vast, unobstructed interior volumes. The hall’s single, expansive floor plan means events predominantly feature standing configurations, allowing for considerable flexibility in stage placement and crowd management. Capacity varies significantly depending on the event type and setup, ranging from several hundred for intimate gatherings to over 2,500 standing attendees for large-scale concerts or exhibitions.
Without permanent tiered seating or balconies, sightlines across the flat concrete floor are generally expansive due to the generous ceiling height, but can become challenging for those further from the stage in a dense crowd. While the industrial architecture offers a stark, impressive backdrop, its inherent acoustic properties are a practical consideration. The high ceilings and hard, reflective surfaces of concrete and steel naturally contribute to substantial reverberation. Consequently, the quality of the live sound experience is highly dependent on meticulously engineered and powerful PA systems, designed to counteract the hall's natural propensity for echo and sound dispersion. The space demands sophisticated acoustic treatment and reinforcement to achieve clarity and impact.
The Live Experience & Current Schedule
Entry into the hall is typically managed through the designated main entrance on the north facade, directly facing the IJ waterfront. This ingress leads into a spacious foyer area where temporary bars are commonly set up, providing refreshment options before and during events. For standing-room-only concerts, the main floor quickly fills, creating a dense and energetic environment, particularly near the stage. The raw, industrial aesthetic of the space fosters a distinct, often vibrant, crowd atmosphere, particularly suited to electronic music, alternative rock, and large-scale cultural performances.
With 2 live performances scheduled, upcoming entry prices start from €206.88. The next confirmed event on the calendar is DGTL 2026 ADE - Lane 8 on 24th October 2026.
Travel & Arrival Logistics
Rail & Mainline Connections
The nearest mainline station is Amsterdam Centraal. From the rear (IJ-zijde) of Amsterdam Centraal, take the free GVB NDSM ferry. Upon disembarking at NDSM, proceed with a 12-minute walk east along the waterfront, following the Scheepsbouwwerf towards the venue.
Bus & Local Transit
Several GVB bus routes serve Amsterdam-Noord. Key routes such as GVB Bus 35 and 38 connect the area. The "Atalantabrug" or "Klaprozenweg" stops are within a 5 to 7-minute walk inland from the venue, offering connections to other parts of Amsterdam-Noord and onward to metro and tram networks.
Parking & Vehicle Access
Specific paid parking garages are available in the vicinity. Q-Park NDSM Werf is approximately a 10-minute walk west along the waterfront. Further east, Parking Pontsteiger is around a 15-minute walk. Parking fees in Amsterdam-Noord can be substantial, and the area can experience congestion during large events. Advance online booking for these facilities is highly recommended to secure a space and potentially benefit from pre-paid rates.
Entry, Queues & Security
The primary public entrance is located on the building's north facade, directly overlooking the IJ waterfront. Queue arrangements typically involve outdoor barriers along this waterfront aspect. All attendees are subject to standard security protocols, including mandatory bag checks and personal searches upon entry. To ensure a smooth ingress and avoid last-minute delays, it is advisable to arrive 30-45 minutes prior to the advertised door opening time.
